IPL-Shane Warne

Shane Warne is one of the perfect bywords, for a ‘leg spin revolution’. In era, when speed and swing were dominating the batsmen, where spinners were treated with disdain and scant respect, he encroached into scene and defied the whole script.

He asserted the fact, that bowling is not merely about speed and pace, and what control and accuracy coupled with shrewd deftness can contrive. In fact he became first bowler in international cricket, to achieve 700 wickets mark, which was a pure sorcery, for a leg spinner to even dream of.

He made his test debut in year 1992 ,in Sydney against England and also his ODI debut in succeeding year. He has played 194 ODI matches and 146 test matches since then. He has taken 708 test wickets, by time he retired, which was world record at that time and 296 ODI wickets.

He had a bowling average of about 25 in both test and ODI, which could orate about his effectiveness as a bowler. He was no mug with bat, where he scored twelve fifties and played few memorable innings to save his team from dire straits.

His famous delivery to Mike Gating in 1993 , against England, where ball pitched well outside off – stump and spun to hit the half stump, is one of the highlight of cricketing era. It showcased his calibre and potential.

Even though he did not garner huge success in ODI parallel to test, he was ‘impact’ bowler and he was hugely responsible for Australia clinching world cup 1999 in England, where he brought his team back to winning position against South Africa in semi- finals and also was conferred man of match in finals of world cup.

He had few low points in his cricketing career, which hindered his progress. He was suspended for a year, for using a banned drug in several occasions and he became a part of several controversies including bookmakers and girl friends.

Even though controversies marred him, his sorcery with ball never showed any signs of decline. In 2004 he took incredible 26 wickets in a three match series and also in next year he took world record 96 victims.

He has 10 ten wickets haul to his name and 37 five wicket hauls in his entire test career. In his illustrious and long cricketing career, he had exciting duels with great batsmen like Sachin Tendulkar, Brain Lara and Kevin Pietersen in 2005 ashes. Certainly without him test cricket would have been a rung lower, in quality and excitement. He captained his most under favourite side Rajatshan Royals to crown the trophy, which also brought to limelight his leadership skills.

He was conferred a rare honour, when he was named as one of five cricketer of this century in 2000 and one could understand why.
