IPL-Adam Gilchrist

He can be a perfect role model for anyone, who would dream to don the ‘wicket keeping gloves’ in International cricket in generations to come. He changed perspective cricketers view ,on role of wicket keeper in the team.

He made his ODI debut in year 1996, from that point he became the key component of what people call the Golden era of Australian cricket, where they won three successive world cups 1999, 2003 and 2007. In his 287 ODI matches, he has scored 9619 runs with 16 centuries and 55 half centuries, the figures any present International cricket wicket keeper would dream of. He was fast and furious as a leopard with bat and also calm and collective behind the stumps, which earned him global accredition.

He made his test debut in year 1999 and has scored more than 5570 runs in his 96 test matches. In fact he had a strike rate of about 82, which was less than his much more impressive ODI strike rate of 92.

He redefined the test batting and no doubt accelerated the audience for test cricket by inundating with quality coupled with audacity. He had a slightly different role in test matches, where he came as a lower middle order batsman and defied the predictions of experts by his breathtaking batting, which changed the complexion of match in one session.

The aroma of his test batting could be summarized merely using his three innings, where he scored a nonchalant 201 in Johannesburg against south Africa, his breath taking ashes century in Perth in just fifty seven balls and also his saviour act of 149 against Pakistan in Hobart, which clinched the victory for their team.

He had few smuts and blemishes, when it came to wicket keeping and catching behind the stumps is concerned, but still he was fairly consistent, where he took 417 catches in ODI and 379 catches in test matches. He was an inspirational force in Australian team and was handed over vice – captaincy role to assist his then skipper Ricky Pointing.

He was purchased by Deccan Chargers in IPL 1st auction and has been announced as the captain for their team in second season. With having Gilchrist at helm of affairs, Deccan chargers are sure to put a much improved performance this season, unlike their previous season.

He was one of the rare gems of cricket, who was like a run machine, which never declined in his performance even with age. In fact his spanking 149 against Srilanka in 2007 world cup fincal came at age of 35, which galvanised huge Australian victory.
