The opening game of the IPL 2009 will see Sachin Tendulkar's Mumbai Indians, take on IPL 2008 finalists, the Chennai Super Kings, at Newlands in Cape Town.

The Chennai Super Kings, under the leadership of wicketkeeper/batsman MS Dhoni, are entering this year's IPL as one of the bookmaker’s favourite.

Big hitting all-rounders Andrew Flintoff and Albie Morkel will be at the forefront of the Super Kings attack this coming Saturday.

They will try to be tamed by the Mumbai Indian's bowlers, consisting of Zaheer Khan, Lasith ‘Slinga’ Malinga and Harbhajan Singh, who have the knowledge of Shaun Pollock on their side, when taking on the often tricky Newlands pitch.

All eyes will be on Mumbai's Sanath Jayasuria, to see if he can entertain the sold-out Newlands crowd, as he tries follow up his record as IPL’s greatest six hitter.

Other Mumbai batsmen to watch will be the "Maestro" Sachin Tendulkar, "Million-Dollar Kid" JP Duminy and West Indian Dwayne Bravo.

They'll try to be unsettled by Chennai's Makhaya Ntini, Muttiah Muralitharan, and Lakshmipathy Balaji.

Brett Lee is one of the most exciting fast bowlers, in present era of International cricket. He has a huge reputation for his fiery out swinging delivery to fast bowlers and he is almost a treat to watch with a new ball, a role, which was conferred to him, after the retirement of greats like Mc. Grath.

He made his test debut back in 1999 and his ODI debut occurred exactly the succeeding year and has played more than 76 test matches and 173 ODI matches since then and has taken 310 wickets in test matches and 303 wickets in ODI.

Even though he dint garner instant success in both formats, in early phase of his career, he had a rapid face, which always lured the selectors while opting to pick their squads. He was also mostly in and out of the Australian XI, which had great names like Glenn. Mc. Grath, Michael Kasprowroicz and Jason Gillespie.

But from 2003 world cup, cricketing world witnessed a much more evolved Brett lee, who operated, with controlled and clever aggression in new ball. He has taken the mantle of leading Australian pace attack ,after the retirement of great bowlers in Australian jersey and in fact he was awarded the test player of the year and Allan Border Medal in year 2008, which speaks the way he led by example for his fellow Australian bolers.

He is no doubt termed as a man with golden arm, with an amazing strike rate of below 30’s (i.e.) 29.2 in ODI, which croons volumes about his striking ability to floor the opposition batting line up.

He has 10 ten wicket haul in test matches combined with eight five wicket haul in ODI’s, which showcases his match winning abilities. The fact that he has been the part of the bowling line up, which won the world cup twice, is more than enough to prove his calibre in world cricket.

He was said to be gutsy, even with his willow, where he averages around 20’s in test matches coming in eight down. He orchestrated several performances with bat and won it for Australia and his partnership with fellow bowler kasprowicz, to contrive a nail biting win over south Africa in 2006 is perfect example for it.

He has played only 13 T 20 international matches, so far and taken twelve wickets. He played for Punjab kings XI last year in IPL and fared well. Brett lee sustained a foot and ankle injury recently which kept him out of present South African series, would be desperate to make a claim to ashes side, by performing well for Punjab kings XI without any doubt.

IPL-Albie Morkel

Albie Morkel has become a revelation in International cricket, for past two years, ever since his T 20 world cup in South Africa. He is touted to be next Lance klusener in making, with his monstrous hitting and right – arm fast medium bowling.

He impressed his selectors in year 2004, when they stumbled on his performance, for Eastern Province side, against touring West Indies side, with a scintillating hundred and also a five wicket haul. He was inducted into South African side, which toured New Zealand later, but was hugely unsuccessful in his stint.

He was released, to play domestic matches, where he played for teams like Somerset, titans, Eastern provinces and Durham and he was fairly impressive in an all – rounder tag, where he took some 157 wickets and scored some 2105 runs at average of 41.05.

He soon became too hot for selectors and his impressive performance for his South African team in T 20 world cup, which is held in South Africa, stalked him with a place in his ODI side. He has an impressive T 20 career, where in his 16 matches he averages around 25 at strike rate of 139. 72 and also has picked 10 wickets at average of 30’s.

He has played only 35 ODI matches, where he averages about 24 with an amazing strike rate of 102, which has caused a huge panic in bowlers circuit and he has in recent matches has plundered many International teams , through his late hitting ability in ODI and T 20, which has cemented his place in his national side.

He played in last year IPL under Chennai Super Kings. In fact the departure of Jacob Oram, after early few matches, cemented a permanent place in team, which he grabbed it with both hands and performed well with both ball and bat. He was one of the top ten highest wicket taker with thirteen wickets in mere 11 matches and his amazing strike rate of above 140 was hugely responsible, for Chennai super kings treading ,to finals of the tournament.

He had showed incredible promise that selectors were left with no other option but, to award him with a gift of test debut against Australia recently in Cape Town, where he scored fifty eight runs in his sole innings.

Now with IPL being shifted to South Africa, Albie Morkel is going to be huge impetus for chances of Chennai super Kings,with huge fan following and rude hitting.

IPL-Muttiah Muralitharan

In era of test cricket, which is considered as bowlers curse or batsmen‘s paradise; we are going to shuttle about a man, who is targeting 1000 test wickets, none other than Muttiah Muralitharan who rose to fame through his miracle bowling.

He made his test debut well in year 1992 against Australia and his ODI debut came in succeeding year. He has played 127 test matches and 329 ODI matches since then. He has 770 massive test wickets and also 505 ODI wickets to his tally. In fact he is the only player till date, who has managed, to contrive more than 500 wickets in both formats of the game.
Not that his career isn’t been mired by controversies, there were plenty of speculation about his legality in action. In 1995 - 96, Daryl Harper, Australian Umpire called him for his illegal action in a test matches and also later in ODI series which followed it later. But he was cleared by ICC team of Biomedical Analysis Committee in Perth and also by University of Hongkong. In 1998 – 1999, he went through similar script and later cleared by further test by ICC.

In 2004 series, he was reported, for his illegal Doosra delivery ,by the match refree Chris Broad, which made ICC delve deeper into issue seriously. They discovered that majority of bowlers had habit of bending their hands, while bowling and his bowling action is well within stipulated 15 degrees bend allowed for bolwer.

But nothing perturbed Muralitharan the bowler, in fact he has sixty six 5 wicket haul and twenty twenty 10 wicket haul in his 127 tests and also astounding 10 five wicket haul which gives a fair idea of his sheer will power and determination. He has a strike rate of about 22 in both test matches and ODI, which was amazing figures in any era.

He has also represented Srilanka side in finals of world cup for couple of occasions, once in 1996 world cup and 2007 world cup in West Indies while in early one Srilanka side won. In fact he was one of the chief architects of Srilanka’s march towards world cup final in 2007, where he took amazing 23 wickets in that series.

Surprisingly he has played only 1 T 20 international matches and he is one of the players contracted by IPL, where he represents for Chennai Super Kings Franchise and he fared well last year for the Chennai super kings

Many critics feel that, he could not always replicate the same magic, which he creates in sub – continent pitches and his home grounds, but actually critics are always supposed to do their roles of criticizing isn’t it, but one cannot take a iota away from his sheer cricketing talent and weird bowling, which can even make a European football fanatic, to stand and take notice.

IPL-Sanath Jayasuriya

Sananth Jayasuriya is one of the unique personalties in Inetrnational cricket, who has literally liquidated age constraint. In his ripe age of 39, sanath Jayasuriya is still integral tombs of Srilanka ODI and T 20 line up.

He made his ODI debut in year 1989 against Australia and his test debut in year 1991 against New Zealand. He has played 110 test matches and 432 ODI since then, scoring 6973 and 13, 151 runs in test and ODI respectively. He is one of the best all – rounder especially in ODI with impressive 331 wickets tally along with 13, 000 plus runs, which can easily earn him a place in any International cricket team. It’s not surprising he holds the record for highest individual score of 193, which came against India.

He took the world by storm in 1996 world cup, through his fearless and destructive approach at top of order, with his teammate Romesh Kaluwitharana, which was one of the few highlights of world cup. As expected they thumped Aussies in final and he was one of the principal architects, for world cup win.

He commenced to show form in test matches also, after the world cup impetus, where he has scored some 14 centuries in his 110 test matches, with an average of around 40. He has got 28 ODI centuries under his name with strike rate of 91.13. He has a much more impressive strike rate of 150’s in his thirteen T 20 matches, he has played.

He was ascended to captaincy role, after dumping of Arjuna Ranatuga as captain due to world cup debacle. He captained the side till 2003 and resigned after Srilanka lost the cup badly.

He had a golden period in 2004, where he scored a brilliant second innings hundred, against mighty Australians, which nearly levelled series and also his nerve cracking double hundred against Pakistan in Faisalabad and he followed it up with twin centuries in Asia cup.

He announced his retirement in 2006, but soon retrieved it back. He announced his retirement from test matches in his first test against England in Kandy in 2007 – 08 series with a brilliant 78 in his last innings.

Many experts thought, that his career was over, when he was dropped from Srilankan squad to west Indies, but he showcased his class in Indian Premiere league first season, where he collated 514 runs for his Mumbai Indians franchise and ended up the tournament as third highest run getter with highest number of sixes in tournament.

He was selected in squad of Asia cup, where he scored a brilliant century in finals against India, to stage a renowned victory. At age of forty, he is all set to rock the T 20 world cup, which is going to held in England, later this June and also 2nd edition of IPL, which is going to be held in south Africa. Certainly ‘old is gold’.

IPL-Lasith Malinga

Lasith Malinga is touted as a fastest bowler in Sri Lanka at present scenario. In fact he managed, to earn a contract in much elusive IPL2 ,for the Mumbai Indians franhcise is a testimony of his potential, which he has showcased in his short and brief career.

He made his test debut against Australia in Darwin in year 2004, after his string of fiery spells for Gale cricket club and Academy XI. In fact he made his ODI debut in same year itself against UAE. He had a huge reputation for his rapid pace and un- orthodox slinging bowling action, which sometimes flustered batsmen.

He has played in 28 tests and 53 ODI matches till then in brief career. He has taken 91 wickets and 79 wickets in test and ODI respectively. He has also represented English county club Kent for a brief while. He has taken two five wicket hauls in his brief test career.

Lasith Malinga bowled few fiery spells in New Zealand, where they even complained to officials to change the colour of his jersey, as they had problems with viewing the ball because of his slinging action. He has a huge reputation for firing Yorkers at death stages of game, as well as for his swing bowling with new ball.

He had a honey moon period during 2007 world cup, which was held in West Indies, where he took 18 wickets in total and was one of the principal reasons to romp Srilanka to finals. He also achieved a very rare feet of taking 4 wickets in consecutive balls, against South Africa in that World Cup.

He had a mixed 2008 season, where he was termed as largely in effective in his two test series in Australia and also subsequent home series against England.

He has played only 8 T 20 international till date and has taken only seven wickets. He has a good average of around 25 in both ODI and T 20, whereas his test average in terms of bowling is bit high tar around 33.20.

He had his problems with injuries, which has curbed his progress greatly. He spent most of his time in 2009, without even able to practise, due to his knee injury, which daunted his international career. The BCCI launched the Indian Premier League (IPL) on the lines of football’s English Premier League and the National Basketball League (NBA) of the US.

The IPL is a professional Twenty20 cricket league created and promoted by the BCCI and backed by the ICC. The Twenty20 league is set to debut in April 2008, with eight teams comprising a minimum of 16 players each. The league will last for 44 days and will involve 59 matches.

The IPL works on a franchise-system based on the American style of hiring players and transfers. These franchises were put for auction, where the highest bidder won the rights to own the team, representing each city.

The auction for the same took place on January 24, 2008 and the total base price for the auction was $400 million. The auction went on to fetch $723.59 million.

The Mumbai franchise owned by Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) was the most expensive franchise - fetching $111.9 million closely followed by Vijay Mallya’s United Breweries which paid $111.6 million for the Bangalore franchise .

Media house Deccan Chronicle won the Hyderabad chapter of the IPL for $107 million, while India Cements’ Chennai franchise cost $91 million.

Bollywood also made its presence felt with two of its leading stars bagging the ownership of their respective teams - Shah Rukh Khan and Juhi Chawla’s Red Chillies Entertainment buying out Kolkata for $75.09, while Preity Zinta and her beau Ness Wadia bought the Mohali team for $76 million.

5) Deccan Chargers: The Hyderabad team was bought by Deccan Chronicle, a media house, for $107 million for a 10-year period. Team India’s Test player VVS Laxman is the captain of Deccan Chargers. India’s fielding coach, Robin Singh is the coach of the team.
